Case Study:

Bar Refurbishment for B:Music, Birmingham Town Hall

Birmingham Town Hall is one of the city’s most recognised historic venues, hosting performances, community events, and large audience gatherings throughout the year.

Igloo Property Group delivered a refurbishment of the main bar area, with the aim of improving functionality for staff while creating a more welcoming experience for visitors.

Working in partnership with DSA Consultants and GS Catering, the project focused on refreshing the existing bar layout, updating finishes, and ensuring the final environment complemented the character of the building. As a live venue with heritage significance, the work required careful planning and coordination to ensure high standards were maintained throughout.

Scope of Works

To bring the bar area up to a modern operational standard, Igloo delivered a comprehensive programme of refurbishment works, including:

Strip-out and preparation of the existing space

Repurposing an existing reception desk for use within the new bar layout

Installation of new flooring and decorative finishes

Electrical and plumbing alterations to support new equipment and improve efficiency

Installation of studwork to house for new fridges and drinks compartments

Interior wall of the bar featuring black-and-white mural photographs of people dancing, with a long wooden wall-mounted counter below, teal-painted walls, carpeted flooring, and a TV screen above.

Meeting tight deadlines

The refurbishment needed to be completed within an agreed programme to ensure the bar was ready ahead of a busy events period. The works had to be completed to agreed deadlines, and these were achieved in full as planned.

Addressing drainage requirements

Drainage considerations were identified early in the project. Igloo worked with the client to agree compliant solutions, integrating them into the overall layout and avoiding disruption to wider venue operations.

Ensuring compatibility with new catering equipment

With new bar and catering equipment being installed, Igloo worked with GS Catering to ensure the required connections and layouts were suitable.

Repurposing existing joinery

Transforming an existing reception desk for use within the refurbished bar required skilled workmanship to achieve the desired appearance and durability. The repurposed unit was completed to a high standard, helping retain character while reducing waste.
